Scholarship Background

The Bill Marlenee Scholarship for Millwrights and Ironworkers is established to honor the life and legacy of Bill Marlenee by supporting graduating Minot Public Schools students who are pursuing careers in the skilled trades.

This scholarship recognizes that careers in the trades require skill, dedication, hard work, reliability, and a willingness to learn. It is intended to help students as they take their first steps toward becoming professional ironworkers or millwrights and to reduce some of the initial cost of purchasing the tools and equipment needed to begin their careers.

Scholarship Awards

Two scholarships will be awarded:

  • Bill Marlenee Ironworker Scholarship — $500

  • Bill Marlenee Millwright Scholarship — $500

Scholarship funds are intended primarily to assist recipients with the purchase of tools, safety equipment, work gear, or other required items necessary to begin training or employment in their chosen trade.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Be a graduating senior from a Minot North High School.

  • Have plans to pursue a career as an ironworker or millwright.

  • Be entering an apprenticeship, union training program, technical or trade school, employer-sponsored training program, or another recognized pathway leading to employment in the identified trade.

  • Demonstrate a genuine commitment to entering and succeeding in the skilled trades.

Academic achievement may be considered, but this scholarship is not intended to be based primarily on GPA. Consideration should also be given to qualities important in the trades, including work ethic, dependability, perseverance, responsibility, hands-on ability, and willingness to learn.

Application

Applicants will be asked to provide a brief response addressing:

  1. Why they are interested in becoming an ironworker or millwright.

  2. What experiences have helped prepare them for this career.

  3. Their plans for apprenticeship, training, education, or employment after graduation.

  4. What receiving this scholarship and assistance with purchasing tools would mean to them as they begin their career.

Applicants may also provide information regarding employment, Career and Technical Education coursework, internships, job shadowing, SkillsUSA participation, construction or agricultural experience, mechanical experience, or other hands-on learning related to their chosen field.

Selection

Recipients should be selected based on their demonstrated commitment to pursuing the trade, their work ethic and character, and the likelihood that the scholarship will help them successfully begin their career.

Whenever possible, one scholarship will be awarded to a student pursuing ironworking and one scholarship will be awarded to a student pursuing millwright work.
